Changing the World for Women and for Technology
Wednesday, April 27, 2005 - 11:00 am Engineering 2 Building, Room #499
Speaker: Dr. Telle Whitney - President & CEO of the Anita Borg Institute for Women in Technology
Abstract:
Technology and Innovation are an important part of our future, and much of the work is extremely exciting and important. Today, women are not playing a significant enough role in the design and our voices are important in creating useful and significant technology. This talk explores the work being done at the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology to change the conversation in how technology is created, and to celebrate and honor women who are making significant and important contributions. We will also explore ways in which women can and do learn from each other, and leadership techniques that work.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Telle Whitney is President and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology. A long-time friend and colleague of Institute founder Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003). In 1994 Dr. Whitney co-founded the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) conference along with Dr. Anita Borg. Today, the GHC conference is one of the Institute's flagship events, and the largest technical gathering for women in the world.
Follow-up: Book references from Telle's presentation:
- Linda Babcock & Sara Laschever - Women Don't Ask: Negotiations and the Gender Divide
- Stone, Douglas, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen - Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most
(New York: Penguin Books, 1999)
Goes further and builds upon Getting to Yes. Very useful, easy and quick read - Kegan, Robert and Lisa Laskow Lahey - How the Way We Talk Can Change the Way We Work: Seven languages for Transformation
(San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2001)
Includes an interesting exercise that helps us figure out why we don't do what we say we want to do.
