Introduction to Intellectual Property
Wednesday June 5, 2006 - 1 PM Engineering 2 Building, Room #215
Event organized in collaboration with the ACM student chapter at UCSC and the UCSC Post-doctoral Scholars Association
Speaker: Gerald Barnett - Director of the Office for Management of Intellectual Property
Abstract:
Intellectual property follows innovation, and innovation distinguishes a research university. How do we manage patents, copyrights, and trademarks to further the mission of a research university? How do we balance the interests of individuals, of research teams, entrepreneurs, companies, and investors?
At this meeting, we will discuss the basics of intellectual property in a research setting, and spend time addressing questions about the five most important elements of IP management--ownership, control, money, attribution, and risk. We will pay special attention to work for the University, work as an intern, and research team dynamics.
