SWE and eWomen attended the Women of Vision Awards ceremony on May 3rd, 2007. The evening started with entertainment by a female dancer/acrobat troupe performing to drumming in fantastic costumes. The lobby had posters with stories about "Who Inspired You", including one highlighting Alisa's undergraduate mentor, Dr. Sandeep Mitra. To the surprise of all, the master of ceremonies mentioned the story in her opening remarks and noted that Alisa is now earning her PhD at UC Santa Cruz. The keynote speaker was Esther Dyson, a startup investor with a sharp eye for technology trends (and an equally sharp wit). She was skillfully and engagingly interviewed by master of ceremonies Sydnie Kohara, CBS 5 Eyewitness News Anchor. The award for innovation went to Deborah Estrin, for her research in sensor networks. It was interesting that she chose to work on projects with practical impact (such as environmental monitoring). She clearly had given her heart to her work and had inspired those working with her on the multidisciplinary projects. The award for social impact went to Leah Jamieson for the EPICS program (Engineering Projects in Community Service). The final award, for leadership, went to Duy-Loan T. Le. She started as a memory design engineer at Texas Instruments, and rose to Senior Fellow. She started her speech by thanking the United States, her family and her company for all the opportunities she had received. It soon became clear that she possessed incalculable drive and energy that had taken her a long ways. Her speech ended by acknowledging us, the future of technological innovation, and (in not so many words) adjuring us to strive to be as excellent as she believes we are.
